Barry Morphew Told Investigators He Was Asleep. His Truck Data Said WHAT?!

Published by Tony Brueski on

Barry Morphew left his Chaffee County home before dawn on Mother’s Day 2020 for a construction job in Broomfield — more than a hundred miles east. He told investigators Suzanne was asleep when he left. That evening, Suzanne’s daughters reported her missing. The overnight data didn’t match Barry’s account. Truck sensors recorded activity between 3:25 and 3:51 a.m. His phone powered off twice. At 6:10 a.m., he texted Suzanne “Happy Mother’s Day.” Her phone had stopped all activity at 4:23 a.m. The work trip lasted almost ten hours. Barry spent less than thirty minutes at the site. Investigators documented five stops where items were disposed of along the route. The state charged first-degree murder, built a case around the digital trail, and then lost the ability to present it. Disorganized discovery, inadequate expert disclosures, and judicial exclusions stripped the prosecution’s theory of the witnesses who could explain it. Nine days before trial, the case was dismissed.
