This Officer Put On a Mask the ONE Night Sandra Birchmore Was Killed

Matthew Farwell hated masks. Prosecutors say he put one on for the first time the night Sandra Birchmore died — the one night his face needed to be hidden. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines what happens inside the mind of an officer who allegedly maintains two separate lives and the behavioral crack that shows in that single decision. Farwell used his patrol car and on-duty hours to meet Sandra, logging the time as work. When Sandra became pregnant, everything Farwell had built started to collapse. Her friend called the police station. And then prosecutors allege Farwell drove from Sandra’s apartment building to the hospital where his wife was delivering their child — still wearing the same clothes. Scott, author of Nightbird, explains what each of those choices reveals and confronts how the defense is using Sandra’s own psychological injuries to argue she took her own life.
