Sandra Birchmore’s Chief Refused to Destroy the Investigation — Then THIS

Published by Tony Brueski on

Sandra Birchmore’s police chief refused to destroy an investigation into the officers — and paid for it. Chief Donna McNamara allegedly opened a second probe into the Stoughton department and says Town Manager Robin Calter demanded the report be destroyed. McNamara refused. She is now on administrative leave. The officers whose conduct she exposed are the reason her department is under scrutiny. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines what this tells a clinician about how institutions behave when someone inside breaks ranks. McNamara was the department’s first female officer and its first female chief. The second investigation reportedly uncovered details about another unnamed former employee. Someone inside the department allegedly tipped Farwell about a phone call concerning him. Scott, author of Nightbird, explains why the instinct to protect the institution often overrides the obligation to protect the person the institution harmed — and why the coverup has not stopped.
