Matthew Farwell’s Twin, the Deputy Chief and the Troopers Who Looked Away

Published by Tony Brueski on

Matthew Farwell isn’t one bad apple, and I talk straight to the badges around him who prove it. Stoughton’s police chief was convicted in 2009 for helping cover up a sergeant’s shakedown, and a 12-year-old Sandra Birchmore joined its police youth program the next spring. I take on Deputy Chief Robert Devine, who ran that program; William Farwell, who testified under immunity he was with Sandra on duty; and State Police Sgt. John Fanning, who William says wanted the case closed. Prosecutors allege Matthew Farwell strangled Sandra on February 1st, 2021, and staged a hanging; his lawyers say she took her own life. Closings start Friday.
