Christa Pike’s Execution Doctor Had WHAT in His Record?!

Christa Pike’s failed execution did not begin with the two doses of pentobarbital Tennessee administered on September 30. The warning signs were already sitting in the state’s own recent history. Pike survived the execution attempt, remained alive after the drug was administered twice, and was taken to a hospital after officials could not complete the sentence.

The physician assigned to the execution was Dr. Mark Fowler. Four months earlier, Fowler had been involved in the failed execution attempt of Tony Carruthers, where officials could not establish the required IV access and the execution was stopped. Court records from that litigation say Fowler testified that he had not placed a central line since 2013 and that he held no hospital privileges. Pike’s legal team raised those facts before her own scheduled execution. Tennessee’s lawyers argued that the physician’s qualifications were not relevant to the constitutional method-of-execution claim before the court.

Then September 30 happened. Pike received two doses of pentobarbital and survived. Witnesses described continued breathing and audible snoring before she was transported to an outside medical facility. The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed every step of the state’s lawful protocol. Governor Bill Lee responded by stopping the remaining 2026 execution and ordering an independent review.
