Christa Pike and Sandra Birchmore: Who Got Told First?!
Both of these cases turn on information that reached the right desk in time to matter.
Christa Pike’s legal team told a Tennessee court in January that her blood condition and small veins would make an IV line hard to place, and asked for a smaller butterfly needle handled by trained medical staff. The state answered that routine blood draws proved her veins were fine. The execution was carried out on September 30. Two doses of pentobarbital went in, Pike came out alive, and her attorneys say the lines failed and the drug leaked into both arms. Governor Bill Lee has since halted the remaining 2026 executions and announced the resignation of his corrections commissioner.
Sandra Birchmore’s friend called Matthew Farwell’s own police department on January 20, 2021. Prosecutors say someone inside Stoughton PD passed that call to Farwell, who sent Sandra a run of angry messages. She died twelve days later at 23, eight to ten weeks pregnant. Farwell, a former detective there, has pleaded not guilty and maintains she took her own life.
