Alleigha Botner Read WHAT in Caleb Flynn’s Texts?!

Alleigha Botner’s testimony helped prosecutors put Caleb Flynn’s private words in front of the jury that convicted him of killing Ashley Flynn. The next question is whether any of those same messages could matter outside the criminal case.

Botner testified about an affair that generated more than 100,000 messages. She read exchanges in which Flynn talked about Ashley being gone and about killing her. She also described deleting a message after Ashley’s death because she feared police would uncover the affair. Reporting from the trial further documented that she initially denied the relationship to federal investigators.

Flynn is now convicted. Botner has not been charged in Ashley’s death. That distinction matters because civil liability cannot be built from disgust alone. Ohio has expressly abolished alienation-of-affection claims, which means Ashley’s family cannot simply sue a third party for having an affair with a married person.

Ohio’s wrongful-death statute is different. It allows a case against someone whose wrongful act, neglect, or default caused a death. That is a causation question, not a morality question. A plaintiff would need evidence tying the defendant’s own conduct to the killing in a legally recognized way.

Ohio also has a statute requiring a person who knows a felony is being committed to report it, subject to exceptions. No charge under that law has been brought against Botner, and the public record does not establish that a court has found she had the knowledge required by the statute.

The texts made her a central witness. They do not automatically make her a civil defendant. This episode separates what the jury heard from what a future lawsuit would actually have to prove.
