Alex Murdaugh’s Murder Case Hangs on Whether One SLED Agent Lied

Published by Tony Brueski on

Alex Murdaugh’s motion to dismiss comes down to one question about SLED’s lead case agent, David Owen: lie, or honest mistake. Owen told the July 14, 2022 grand jury the spatter on Alex’s shirt held Maggie and Paul’s DNA. SLED’s lab had found no human blood on it, in a report addressed to him that he says he never saw. SLED’s hired expert, Tom Bevel, first reported transfers, not spatter, and a shooter might carry little or none. Then SLED flew the shirt to Oklahoma, and Bevel’s March 14, 2022 email said Photoshop filtering showed a hundred-plus spatter stains. Owen expected “a round table of 5 to 6 colleagues” and got Bevel’s associate. The final report added six unnamed experts agreeing. Alex denies it and is presumed innocent. The defense wants dismissal without prejudice, arguing the grand jury indicted on a spatter claim SLED’s own lab had disproven. Judge McCaslin hears it November 13, 2026.
