The Mystery Issue: Inside the Legal Delays Surrounding Anna Kepner’s Murder

Timothy Hudson’s defense team told a federal judge that one unresolved issue is preventing them from deciding whether their client pleads guilty or goes to trial for the murder of his stepsister Anna Kepner. They won’t say what that issue is. The trial has been pushed back three times — now to January 2027. The judge’s ultimatum: enter a plea January 15th or face a jury ten days later. Hudson was sixteen when Anna was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon. He’s charged as an adult with murder and aggravated offenses. The plea math reportedly gives him 24 to 30 years versus life at trial. His lawyers have acknowledged they’ve never represented a juvenile in federal court. His own mother and stepfather — Anna’s father — would not allow him back in their home. The defense has cited a unique and unfortunate family dynamic as a factor in the delays and says family circumstances limited their access to certain relatives. Anna’s family says they trust the justice system. The system has produced three delays and no answers.
