The Mind of Gypsy Rose | Part 1: A Diagnosis That Should Have Saved Her

Marc Flasterstein wrote “Munchausen by proxy” in Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s chart after a muscle biopsy at Tulane came back negative. The biopsy confirmed Gypsy’s muscles were healthy. The chart said Dee Dee Blanchard was fabricating her daughter’s illness. Flasterstein never reported it. That note sat in a file while Dee Dee continued — pulling Gypsy’s teeth, removing her salivary glands, shaving her head, and maintaining a feeding tube in a child who could eat. Charities gave Dee Dee a free house. Make-A-Wish sent Gypsy to Disney World. The Oley Foundation treated them as a family in crisis. Hurricane Katrina wiped the medical records in 2005, and Dee Dee moved to Springfield, Missouri, with nothing trailing her.
