Nick Reiner’s $558K Now Hinges on His Late Mother’s Word
Three trustees have held Nick Reiner’s money since his parents were found dead, and each gave a different reason for keeping it. Matthew Fishburn never paid the age-30 distribution. Paul Kanin questioned Nick’s competence even though the trust requires two physicians’ statements to make that call, then paid Alan Jackson’s law firm anyway before resigning after fifteen weeks. Jodi Pais Montgomery says she can’t release fifty dollars for shampoo without a court order.
Montgomery’s position is the slayer statute: if Nick is convicted, the money passes to Jake and Romy as if he died first, so releasing it now is irreversible. She also claims, citing Fishburn, that Michele told him Nick consented to leaving the money in the trust. Nick’s lawyers answer that the distribution vested in 2023, that $325,017 came from Carl Reiner, and that the Supreme Court bars freezing untainted money a defendant needs for counsel. The trust is paying both sides’ lawyers.
