Farwell’s Lawyers Called the FBI’s Bone Expert to the Stand and Got THIS

The government had the FBI’s own examiner look at the bone in Sandra Birchmore’s neck, then rested its case against Matthew Farwell without putting her on the stand. On November 3rd the defense did. Dr. Angi Christensen is a forensic anthropologist who worked the bone at the FBI’s Quantico lab, and she gave the jury the one sentence the defense wanted, that no set force breaks a hyoid. She also gave prosecutor Elizabeth Riley the rest: the bone was unfused, unfused bones are less likely to break, and no study she’s read covers a seated hanging in someone Sandra’s age. The defense’s DNA expert spent the morning on the strap, the plastic bag it sat in, and the twin brother the lab never tested, until Judge Denise Casper told him and Riley to stop talking over each other. Two defense witnesses remain before closings on Friday, November 6th.
