Christa Pike’s Executioners Had Three Words After She Lived
Tennessee’s 2025 lethal injection protocol describes the people who have to find Christa Pike’s vein in one sentence, and the list ends with “other certified or licensed personnel.” The Commissioner picks them, and their training certificates come from a four-hour workshop. The physician the state contracts to place a central line said in a deposition that he last did one around 2013 and holds no hospital privileges. The commissioner who issued that protocol came from Arizona, where all three executions he helped oversee in 2022 had IV trouble, and he was hired to fix Tennessee’s. When Darrell Hines asked in July whether that same doctor would set his lines, the department cited the secrecy law and the Tennessee Supreme Court let it stay silent.
