Caleb Flynn Trial Day 5: Botner Reveals His February 16 Message
Alleigha Botner testified that the affair with Caleb Flynn came roaring back just before Ashley Flynn was killed. On February 14, Botner said Caleb told her he hoped their relationship was not over. By February 15, she said they were discussing divorce, jobs, where to live and what came next – sending hundreds of messages that day.
Then came the line Botner read to the jury: “February 16th. A day I’ll never forget.” Botner testified that she understood Caleb’s comments at the time to mean he was finally leaving Ashley. Hours later, Ashley was dead.
Botner said that after learning of the killing, she texted Caleb asking whether the news was real. She also testified that she later resigned from Christian Life Center because she knew the affair would become public. According to Botner, the last time she saw Caleb in person before court was February 16. She testified that Caleb told her, “It didn’t happen the way we thought it would, did it?”
Caleb has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege he murdered Ashley and staged a burglary; the defense says an intruder killed her. The jury now has to evaluate the timing, the words and Botner’s explanation of what she believed they meant.
