Caleb Flynn Trial Day 2: Hammond Says Ashley Was Doing WHAT When Shot?!

David Hammond’s testimony moved from the doors of the Flynn home to the evidence tied to the shooting itself. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation special agent told jurors about the truck Caleb Flynn said contained his gun. He also described what investigators documented inside the bedroom where Ashley Flynn, 37, Caleb’s wife and the victim in the murder case, was found dead. 

The prosecution questioned Hammond for roughly the first two hours of Day 2, moving through photographs of the house before reaching the truck and bedroom evidence. That broader scene documentation is the context for his conclusions about what investigators found inside. 

Hammond testified that investigators swabbed the area of Caleb’s truck where Caleb said his gun had been kept in the center console. That collection step documented a location Caleb identified as the place the gun was stored. 
Inside the bedroom, Hammond testified that investigators found 9mm shell casings. He then gave jurors his opinion about Ashley’s position at the time she was shot. Hammond said Ashley was asleep or lying still when the shots were fired. 

That opinion matters because prosecutors allege Caleb Flynn, 40, killed Ashley and staged the house to look like a home-invasion burglary. The defense says a burglar killed Ashley and argues investigators rushed to focus on Caleb. Caleb has pleaded not guilty to all 11 charges, including aggravated murder. 

This portion of Hammond’s testimony connects three separate pieces jurors will have to keep distinct: where Caleb said the gun was stored, what investigators collected from the truck, and what Hammond believes the bedroom evidence says about Ashley’s movement. None of those points, standing alone, decides who fired the shots. But Hammond’s testimony gives prosecutors a forensic narrative about what happened in that room and gives the defense specific conclusions to challenge as the trial continues.
