Why Sandra Birchmore’s Death Never Reached a Courtroom in 2021

Within a day of Sandra Birchmore being found, prosecutors in the Matthew Farwell trial say, several people told State Police she couldn’t have died by suicide. Her death was still ruled a suicide in May 2021.
The DA cited that ruling when he decided against charges. The medical examiner who made it testified for the prosecution that she gets her information from other agencies. She also said she was never asked if the death was suspicious.
In Massachusetts, her office and the State Police sit under the same state public safety office, and the State Police crime lab tested Sandra’s blood. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers say Sandra took her own life.
Eric Faddis prosecuted cases before becoming a defense attorney, and retired agent Robin Dreeke ran the FBI’s counterintelligence behavioral program. Both join me to ask who should get the final word on how someone died.
