Why Bryan Kohberger Says Judge Hippler Can’t Be Fair to Him

Published by Tony Brueski on

Bryan Kohberger’s reason for firing his judge is the judge’s own sentencing speech. At the July 2025 sentencing, Judge Steven Hippler called Kohberger a “faceless coward,” the “worst of the worst,” and said his acts had buried anything human in him. Kohberger’s appointed attorney Greg Rauch argues that a judge who said that can’t fairly decide whether Kohberger’s guilty plea was coerced, especially with no jury in the room; this is a bench proceeding, where Hippler alone rules. The motion gets argued October 15, 2026, in front of Hippler. Kohberger pleaded guilty on July 2, 2025, to four murders and told Hippler under oath that no one had promised him anything. His handwritten petition says his lawyers coerced him and hid evidence. Prosecutors want it thrown out. Tony takes listener questions on a criminology student who claims he didn’t understand, the privilege he gave up by attacking Anne Taylor, and what the families are owed.
