What Prosecutors Say Lindsay Clancy Knew That Night

Published by Tony Brueski on

Everybody knows Lindsay Clancy was sick. The defense will prove it, the prosecution won’t seriously contest it, and her husband has been saying it publicly since the beginning. That’s not the fight. The fight is what she understood while it was happening.

Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan at the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts home in January 2023. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, has argued for years that she was misdiagnosed and overmedicated and that what followed was psychosis she could not control.

The Commonwealth’s answer showed up in a pretrial fight over witnesses. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague, arguing against letting other mothers testify about postpartum illness, described women who went through it and locked themselves away from their children, or drove off rather than risk it. Judge William Sullivan ruled those witnesses out. The idea behind the objection is going to trial anyway.

Tony Brueski opens the mailbag on a case that has divided this audience straight down the middle — mothers who recognize the illness, people who can’t get past three children in a basement, and people stuck holding both at once.

Sullivan is seating eighteen jurors, six more than the standard panel. Patrick Clancy, who has said publicly that he forgave his wife, is listed as a defense witness. Lindsay Clancy is paralyzed from the waist down and has been held at Tewksbury State Hospital since her arrest.

She has never spoken to law enforcement. A jury is being asked to read a mind that has never made a statement — using prescription records, a search history, and the words of people who were not in that house when it happened.

A conviction means life without parole. A finding of not guilty by reason of insanity means a hospital with periodic review. Cora was five. Dawson was three. Callan was eight months.
