What Happened In Nolan Wells’ Missing 90 Minutes?

There are ninety minutes in the Nolan Wells timeline that nobody has ever fully explained, and they sit right at the center of everything. 
Nolan was eighteen, a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College from Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The timeline itself is mostly machine-logged and undisputed. A boat left a dock outside Ocean Springs at 9:56 on the morning of the Fourth of July. The group reached Horn Island by 11:14. The boat left the island at 4:31 that afternoon, passed Fort Bayou near 5:52, reached a dock at 6:06, and was pulled from the water at a launch by 7:19 before heading overland to Biloxi. 
Between those clean, logged numbers sits the gap. Nolan was last seen on the island around three in the afternoon. Around four, the boat’s operator called a towing company to report the boat was taking on water. Investigators haven’t publicly explained those ninety minutes. Neither have the friends who were out there. Neither has the family’s own legal team. 
A National Park Service ranger recovered Nolan’s body at 8:45 Monday morning off the island’s northwestern tip, in the exact patch of water that had turned up nothing during a search the day before. 
There’s a phone left on the dashboard with two competing explanations, an empty photo roll with two competing explanations, and a video that circulated widely with two competing accounts of how it surfaced. Attorney Ben Crump says Nolan’s friends had his phone after he was left behind, and that messages had been deleted by the time the family got it back. No agency has released a cause or manner of death. 
Ninety minutes is a long stretch of ocean to leave unaccounted for.
