What Did The Planning Document Say About How Rex Heuermann Treated Jessica Taylor?

Jessica Taylor’s remains told the story twice — once in the woods of Manorville in 2003, and again along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach in 2011. Two locations, forty miles apart, eight years between discoveries, the same victim. She was twenty years old, working near Port Authority in the same Midtown neighborhood where Rex Heuermann ran his architecture practice. This look back centers on Jessica and the planning document prosecutors say connects her case to the larger pattern.
The digital file recovered from a computer in Heuermann’s basement was organized into phases — checklists for before, during, and after, with notes on preparation, evidence destruction, and alibis. Prosecutors alleged that material Heuermann consumed online mirrored what was done to Jessica’s remains. A hair found on a surgical drape beneath her remains matched Heuermann’s DNA. And forensic anthropology connected tool marks on her bones to those found on Valerie Mack — the same type of instrument, the same characteristics, years apart.
Jessica was the youngest of the women Heuermann was charged with killing. Heuermann pleaded guilty to her murder as part of the agreement covering seven victims, and admitted to an eighth. He confirmed strangulation as the cause of death for each. The planning document and the forensic linkage between Jessica’s and Valerie’s cases form a critical part of the prosecution’s theory of an escalating, methodical pattern. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting. Jessica was twenty. She deserved more than a case number.
