The Doctor Who Caught What Dee Dee Was Doing to Gypsy Rose and Stayed Quiet
The surgeries in Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s medical file are real: eye procedures, ear tubes, salivary glands removed because Dee Dee said she drooled, a feeding tube that kept her on PediaSure into her twenties.
Her teeth were pulled. She sat in a wheelchair she never needed. In 2001, Tulane tested her for muscular dystrophy and the biopsy came back negative.
Dee Dee found another doctor. In 2007, neurologist Bernardo Flasterstein noted “Munchausen by proxy” in Gypsy’s chart after watching her stand — and never picked up the phone.
Prosecutor Dan Patterson said he could have charged first-degree murder and didn’t think it was fair, given twenty years of documented harm. Rod Blanchard called on Gypsy’s 18th birthday and Dee Dee told him she thought she was 14. A growing crowd online says the Munchausen story was fabricated.
