Richard Allen’s Lawyer Says Delphi Police Saw a Tattoo Shaped Like This and Moved On
Mark Leeman had thirty minutes at the Indiana Court of Appeals on September 21, 2026, and he spent part of it on a man who is not Richard Allen. That argument could send the Delphi murders case back for a new trial, and it starts with a tattoo.
Richard Allen was convicted in November 2024 of murdering Abby Williams and Libby German and is serving 130 years. His trial lawyers wanted the jury to hear about Brad Holder, a man Indiana State Police investigated in 2017 and never charged. Judge Frances Gull said no. The reason is Indiana’s rule on third-party suspects: the defense has to show a direct connection to the crime, and the state argued there wasn’t one.
Leeman told the panel what that rule kept out: two tips in March 2017 naming Holder as a match for Bridge Guy, and a work alibi that rested on a landfill time card. Then came a rune Holder drew on his hand and posted online, which Leeman says has the same shape as the sticks laid on Abby, alongside photos of girls posed as if dead under branches. By Leeman’s account, an officer took that to his superior and asked to reopen, and was told they’d already cleared him.
The state’s response was a location and a clerk. Holder was at a landfill in Buffalo, Indiana, about 25 miles away, when the girls were confronted and when Libby’s phone stopped moving, and a landfill employee testified that a missing driver would have been noticed. The FBI’s analyst, the state added, did not see clear runes in the sticks at all.

Three judges are deciding. The losing side can take it to the Indiana Supreme Court.
