Lindsay Clancy Trial: Prosecutor Buckingham Opens With “This Wasn’t Psychosis”

Published by Tony Brueski on

Opening statements began this week in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family’s Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She’s pleaded not guilty and is mounting an insanity defense, with attorney Kevin Reddington arguing she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication at the time of the killings.

Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham used her opening to lay out the state’s core argument: this was not a woman lost to psychosis, it was a deliberate act. Prosecutors are expected to build their case around the idea that Clancy understood exactly what she was doing that day — a direct challenge to the psychiatric narrative the defense has spent months building. It’s the fight this trial was always going to come down to: was this a mind that broke, or a mind that decided. Buckingham just made clear which side of that line the prosecution intends to stand on, and she’s not planning to hedge.

After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out of the home running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial, underway in Plymouth Superior Court before Judge William F. Sullivan, is expected to run several weeks.
