How Nolan Wells’ Phone Got Off That Island Without Him
An eighteen-year-old’s phone left Horn Island on a sinking boat. The eighteen-year-old didn’t. His friends had it. His mother didn’t know.
Christine Wonsley found out her son was missing at 11 PM on July 4th — seven hours after his friends left the island. She found out they had his phone only because she went looking for it herself. When she got it back, the Snapchat history from that day was empty. Her son used Snapchat all the time.
That phone is now headed for a joint forensic examination with the FBI assisting. This episode traces every hand that touched that device between Horn Island and the forensic lab. It explains how digital forensics distinguishes between messages that were deleted by a person and messages that simply never existed. It lays out the three possible outcomes — and why one of them clears the friends entirely.
The phone’s location data, cross-referenced against the friends’ devices, will show whether Nolan’s phone was ever separated from the group.
