How Did Nolan Wells End Up Alone on That Island?!

There’s a photograph from a Fourth of July boat trip, and Nolan Wells is the only person of color in it. Days later, he’s the only one from that group who isn’t coming home. That single fact is why the Nolan Wells case has gripped the country — and why the questions around it are so hard to put down.

Wells, an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, went out to Horn Island with friends and never made it back. His body turned up in the water off the northwest tip of the island. The sheriff said he chose to stay behind. The autopsy is finished but sealed. And the answers his family is asking for — how he ended up alone out there, why help was so slow, what actually happened before he died — still don’t exist.

This isn’t a rush to judgment in either direction. It’s an argument for why this case has to be investigated all the way to the bottom, and why the people shouting the loudest on both sides are getting in the way of that. It walks through the 13-hour delay before the Coast Guard was called out, the “no foul play” statement that poured gasoline on everything, the witnesses too frightened to speak, and the long shadow of Mississippi’s own record of looking away from deaths exactly like this one.

The point isn’t that one theory is right. The point is that nobody knows yet — and pretending otherwise dishonors a kid whose family is still just waiting to be told what happened to their son.
