How Did Giglo Killer Rex Heuerman Control The People Who Loved Him?

It does not start with a crisis. It starts with a compromise so small you don’t think to question it. Then another. Then a hundred more. And one day you realize you have no idea who you are anymore. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott ties two of the most confounding cases in true crime together through a single thread — the erosion of agency — and turns the conversation toward anyone who’s been making small compromises they barely notice.
Asa Ellerup was married to Rex Heuermann for twenty-seven years. She defended him for three years after his arrest. Then he pleaded guilty to eight murders — seven committed inside their shared home. Eric Richins saw everything his wife Kouri was allegedly doing — told his family, changed his will, consulted a lawyer — and still couldn’t walk out the door. Kouri has since been convicted of his murder. Scott examines the psychological machinery that keeps people tethered: the incremental loss of boundaries, the normalization of what would once have been unthinkable, and the moment when leaving feels more dangerous than staying.
This is the conversation that bridges both cases — not to equate the dynamics, but to illuminate the pattern that runs through them. Scott recently explored this research on her Substack and brings that clinical depth to these two real-world frameworks. Heuermann is expected to be sentenced to three consecutive life terms plus an additional hundred years. We revisit where both cases stood at the time of our reporting.
