Delphi’s Judge Buried Every Alternative Suspect. Then She Did Something Nobody Expected.
Every failure in the Delphi investigation moved in the same direction. Away from alternative suspects. Toward Richard Allen.
The recording system erased every early interview. The only tip from a person who placed himself on the bridge went into a drawer for five years. A catfish account that communicated with one of the girls who was killed went unannounced for four years. The FBI allegedly found evidence pointing to men with Nordic beliefs — buried. The defense filed a hundred-and-thirty-six-page document naming men with confessions, crime scene connections, and dried blood — excluded.
Every time the system had a choice between following evidence that pointed somewhere else and ignoring it, the system ignored it.
The judge who made those rulings — Frances Gull — excluded the Franks memorandum, the alternative suspects, the original police sketch, and the FBI’s alleged behavioral analysis. She left the prosecution with three things: an unspent bullet, Allen’s statement that he was on the trail, and more than sixty confessions from a man in documented psychosis after thirteen months of solitary confinement.
The jury convicted in roughly nineteen hours. Allen was sentenced to a hundred and thirty years. Then Judge Gull did something that tells the rest of the story — a decision she made before the appeal could reach her courtroom.
On September 21, 2026, three appellate judges heard the case. Judge Elaine Brown told the prosecution five words: “You protected him into psychosis.” The defense argued those confessions came from a man whose mind was destroyed by the state’s own custody. The prosecution argued Allen identified himself as Bridge Guy in his own statements.
Three judges are reading the briefs. No ruling deadline has been set.
