Christa Pike Helped Find the Vein — and They Still Failed

Published by Tony Brueski on

Christa Pike cooperated with her own execution. According to her attorneys, she tried to help the IV team locate a vein in her arm. They still could not carry out the procedure. Two doses of pentobarbital. Multiple needle attempts. Arms swollen, burned, and blistered. Pike still breathing on the gurney. May Martinez, the mother of Pike’s victim Colleen Slemmer, was reportedly in or near the witness room on September 30. She came to watch the state fulfill a promise that was thirty-one years old. Instead she watched it fall apart. Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke and Tony Brueski examine what this kind of systemic failure does to every person in the room — the condemned, the family that waited decades, the officers and paramedics who watched their job collapse around them.
