Caleb Flynn Trial Day 2: Officer Velvman Sought WHAT From Venmo?!
Day 2 of the Caleb Flynn murder trial moved deeper into the digital side of the investigation. Tipp City Police Officer Luke Velvman testified that he drafted search warrants for records tied to Caleb Flynn, Ashley Flynn, and Alleigha Botner, including a Venmo warrant for Botner.
Botner matters because, according to the testimony presented in court, Caleb Flynn was involved with her at the time of his wife Ashley Flynn’s death. Velvman said investigators sought records connected to Botner’s Venmo account and searched social-media information associated with her.
Velvman also testified that he wrote a search warrant to Amazon for records connected to the Blink camera system. He separately drafted a warrant for Caleb Flynn’s Gmail account. Those warrants show investigators were looking beyond the physical scene and into electronic accounts that could preserve communications, account activity, or other records relevant to the investigation.
On cross-examination, Velvman said the electronic searches were not limited to Caleb. He testified that warrants covered devices and accounts associated with Caleb Flynn, Ashley Flynn, and Alleigha Botner. Defense questioning also established that investigators examined Botner’s social-media accounts.
Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged the scene to resemble a home-invasion burglary. The defense says Ashley was killed by an intruder and investigators rushed to focus on Caleb.
Velvman’s testimony gives jurors a look at the breadth of the digital evidence collection rather than the final meaning of those records. The warrants tell the jury what police sought and whose accounts they examined. The next question is what those records actually contain, and how either side connects them to its version of what happened inside the Flynn home.
