Why Lindsay Clancy’s Husband Is Testifying For Her Defense
Patrick Clancy’s three children are dead. His wife killed them. And he’s standing in a courtroom pointing at her doctors, not at her.
Lindsay Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder for the January 2023 deaths of Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months, in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home. She has admitted, through her attorney, that she caused their deaths. Her defense: postpartum psychosis so severe she heard a commanding voice she could not resist.
What makes this case unlike any other insanity defense is Patrick. The father. The man who found the children. The man whose 911 call the prosecution wants to play for the jury. He is testifying for the defense. He filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Lindsay’s healthcare providers. He told The New Yorker he wasn’t married to a monster — he was married to someone who got sick.
According to two malpractice lawsuits, Lindsay was prescribed at least ten psychiatric medications over four months by providers who failed to coordinate her care or correctly diagnose her condition. She hospitalized herself three times. She reported thoughts of harming her children. She called a crisis hotline and was told she didn’t qualify for help. Her husband begged a nurse to stop the medications and start over. They upped her dosage.
One hospital had the chance to catch what was happening. They ruled out bipolar disorder and sent her home. A forensic evaluation after the killings diagnosed her with Bipolar Disorder I with psychosis and postpartum onset. The prosecution is now using that hospital’s assessment — the one the lawsuits say was wrong — as evidence that Lindsay was sane.
Jury selection begins July 20. The question isn’t just whether Lindsay Clancy was legally responsible. It’s whether anyone else will ever be held accountable.
