What Nolan Wells’ Friends Wiped Before Anyone Called Police

Published by Tony Brueski on

Nolan Wells didn’t drown on Horn Island so much as he disappeared into a story nobody can quite make add up. Three friends went out with him on the Fourth of July. Three friends came back. His phone turned up later at the boat owner’s house — both Snapchat accounts scrubbed, no call to his mother to say it had been found. The official reason Nolan got left behind is that the boat was taking on water, a claim that a marine mechanic could confirm or blow apart with a look at the bilge pump — a look nobody seems to have taken, since there’s no sign the boat has ever been impounded or examined. Meanwhile the friends have already lawyered up, and the one kid who was actually on the island with Nolan says investigators haven’t so much as called him. A Jackson County judge’s stepson was aboard that same boat. The Coast Guard logged a missing person report at 11 PM and passed on it. Two days later, and after a multi-agency search turned up nothing, Nolan’s body was found exactly where he was last seen. His family didn’t trust the state to give them a straight cause of death, so they ordered their own autopsy. Hundreds have marched through Ocean Springs demanding transparency, and the funeral will need an arena that seats ten thousand people. Somewhere between a wiped phone, an unexamined boat, and a sheriff who says his office won’t be rushed, there’s a version of the Fourth of July that a group of teenagers is working very hard to keep to themselves.
