What Lindsay Clancy Did the Minute Her Husband Walked Out

Lindsay Clancy checked a mapping application to calculate how long her husband’s errand would take. Then, according to prosecutors, she used that fifty-four-minute window to end the lives of Cora, Dawson, and Callan.
The defense says she was hearing a voice she couldn’t refuse. Nine medications — eight prescribed in a three-week span. Psychiatric appointments that were virtual and lasted seventeen minutes. A hospital that told her she was overmedicated and misdiagnosed, then sent her home without follow-up. Her attorney offered to formally admit she was responsible for all three deaths if the judge would split the trial into two phases: guilt first, sanity second. The judge refused.
Now the jury will hear the confession and the psychosis evidence at the same time. The judge also blocked other mothers from testifying about their own experiences with postpartum psychosis — ruling that medical experts can cover the condition adequately. Fifteen women had contacted the defense wanting to tell the jury they had heard the same kind of voices.
Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer sits down with Tony and Robin to walk through the implications. Can psychosis and planning coexist? Did the judge’s rulings just tilt the trial toward the prosecution? And how does a jury process a father — Patrick Clancy — who forgave his wife, sued her doctors, and is taking the stand for the defense?
Jury selection begins July 20 in Plymouth Superior Court. The trial is expected to run four to six weeks. Lindsay Clancy is paralyzed and in a wheelchair. The system that prescribed her nine medications has never been in a courtroom.
