Patrick Clancy Was Still Screaming When Police Came Back

Officer Brian Josephine was standing over Lindsay Clancy in a snow-covered Duxbury backyard when the screaming started inside the house. What he did over the next several minutes came out on the third day of testimony in her murder trial, and it is the kind of account that stays with a jury.

He and Officer Stephen Hall went in. The children’s father met them, frantic, telling them he couldn’t wake them up. They went to the basement. Josephine testified that only the eight-month-old had a pulse at all, and it was faint. Then, in his words, based on his training and previous incidents, he knew it wasn’t going to be good.

CBS News Boston counted ten first responders on the stand. Every one of them testified about an act Lindsay Clancy’s own attorney conceded on the record before opening statements. Her defense is lack of criminal responsibility — postpartum psychosis, and a voice her lawyers say she heard. Prosecutors allege she acted deliberately. Not one expert on that question has testified yet.

The day ended at 12:07 in the afternoon. The prosecution ran out of witnesses, and Judge William Sullivan told the room the trial is ahead of schedule.
