Delphi: Richard Allen’s Defense Filed 136 Pages. The Jury Never Heard a Word.
In September 2023, Richard Allen’s defense team filed a document that should have reshaped the Delphi case. The Franks memorandum ran a hundred and thirty-six pages. It names men the defense alleges were connected to the murders through confessions, social media posts matching the crime scene, and a car that allegedly returned from Delphi with dried blood.
One man’s son was dating Abby Williams at the time of the murders. According to the filing, he posted imagery on social media that allegedly mirrored symbols found next to the girls’ bodies — symbols that were never made public. Another man allegedly confessed to his own sisters that he had been on a bridge with two girls that were killed. His sister took a polygraph. She passed.
A third man allegedly served as a recruiter for a white nationalist group and maintained relationships with the others. His ex-girlfriend told investigators his car came back from Delphi around the time of the murders covered in dried blood. The FBI’s own behavioral analysts allegedly concluded those responsible held “Nordic beliefs.”
None of them were charged. The evidence was excluded from Richard Allen’s trial.
And then there is Kegan Kline. He ran a catfish account that communicated with Libby German. Someone using his account allegedly arranged to meet her the day she was killed. After failing a polygraph about the investigation, he searched his phone for a phrase that suggested he knew exactly what investigators might find. He pled guilty to twenty-five felony counts involving illegal material found on his devices. Sentenced to decades in prison. The state says his case is separate.
The prosecution presented one piece of physical evidence against Allen: a single unspent bullet and a forensic method the Innocence Project has called “not settled science.”
