Murdaugh’s Prosecutors Told the Judge WHAT About Maggie’s DNA?!
SLED found DNA from an unknown, unrelated male under Maggie Murdaugh’s fingernails at the Moselle crime scene. The defense says the agency catalogued it and never pursued it further. Now Dick Harpootlian and the defense team are demanding that an independent lab — the same forensic genealogy operation that helped crack the Idaho student murders and decades-old cold cases — test the last remaining reserve sample before SLED can run additional tests using the same method that already came back incomplete. Prosecutors pushed back hard. They told the judge the unknown profile is too partial to mean anything and that trace DNA under fingernails can transfer through casual contact. They called the defense’s request an exercise aimed at public consumption. The defense fired back with a documented history of how SLED handled other biological evidence in this same investigation — including a white T-shirt that tested negative for human blood before a blood spatter expert allegedly reversed his conclusions after a visit from the lead SLED investigator. The defense’s filing alleges that a SLED forensic administration captain directed her team to stop running exculpatory tests and suppress the results they’d already generated. If the prosecution is right that this DNA is meaningless, letting an independent lab confirm that only strengthens their case at retrial. The pretrial hearing on August 14th could decide whether the sample gets tested independently — or whether SLED’s methodology consumes what’s left first.
