Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell: How It Started

Published by Tony Brueski on

The Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell case is usually told from the end backward. This docu-series tells it from the beginning, and Part 1 is the beginning.

Lori Vallow was a former pageant contestant from California with four marriages behind her by 2006. Her third husband, Joseph Ryan, fought her for custody of their daughter in an Austin family court. In 2007, her brother Alex Cox ambushed Ryan in a parking lot with a stun gun and later pleaded guilty. Eleven years later, Ryan was found dead in Phoenix. The death was ruled natural. In a recording made later that year, Lori told friends she had once intended to kill a man.

Chad Daybell was a Utah gravedigger who became a cemetery sexton, then a publisher, then the author of a shelf of end-times novels. His wife Tammy ran Spring Creek Book Company beside him for years and later became a school librarian in Sugar City, Idaho, raising ducks, chickens and rabbits on their property in Salem.

Tony Brueski traces both lives to the morning of October 26, 2018, when both of them, each still married, set out for the same conference in St. George, Utah. It’s the essential background to everything that follows.
