Lindsay Clancy Trial: Toxicology Witnesses Reveal What Was Detected in Her Blood

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial moved from crime-scene documentation into toxicology this week, and the picture got more complicated. Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother charged with strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family’s Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She’s pleaded not guilty, and Kevin Reddington’s insanity defense hinges on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.
Trooper Johnathon O’Loughlin of the Massachusetts State Police walked the jury through the photographs, drawings, and notes he made of items of interest in the case — the visual record everything else gets measured against. Then things got more pointed. Hillary Griffiths of the Crime Lab’s toxicology unit testified to the drugs actually present in Clancy’s blood at the time of the killings. Lisa Yelle, who worked toxicology at the lab when the incident occurred, explained the “general unknown screens” run on Clancy’s blood and urine — tests that check for hundreds of substances and return a simple detected or not-detected result. No editorializing, no guessing. Just what showed up and what didn’t.
That’s precisely the kind of testimony an overmedication defense either leans on or has to explain around. Prosecutors Jennifer Sprague and Shanan Buckingham let the numbers speak. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. The trial continues before Judge William F. Sullivan in Plymouth Superior Court.
