Lindsay Clancy Trial: Psychiatrist Details Her Delirium and Handing Off Her Own Care
Dr. Sejal Shah, a psychiatrist involved in Lindsay Clancy’s hospital treatment, testified this week, and her account moves the trial squarely into the medical territory the defense has been building toward. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation over the deaths of her children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — who prosecutors allege she strangled with exercise resistance bands inside the family’s Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She’s pleaded not guilty, and her attorney, Kevin Reddington, is arguing an insanity defense rooted in severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.
Shah testified about Clancy experiencing delirium during her hospital stay and told the court Clancy changed her health care proxy over to her parents — a decision that, however it gets read by either side, says something about where things stood. Shah went on to describe Clancy’s broader mental health picture at the time, testimony that’s likely to sit at the center of both the prosecution’s and the defense’s closing arguments once this trial gets there.
The alleged strangulations were followed by an alleged suicide attempt — Clancy is said to have jumped from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands during the killings and has since relocated to Manhattan, where he’s spoken to the press about his wife’s mental health. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court and is expected to run several weeks.
