Lindsay Clancy Trial: Judge, Forensic Scientist, and Nanny Detail DNA and Depression Confessions

Lindsay Clancy, the 34-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family’s Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, faced a courtroom day built entirely on physical evidence and personal history. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She has pleaded not guilty, and attorney Kevin Reddington is mounting an insanity defense centered on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Plymouth Superior Court Judge William F. Sullivan opened proceedings by reading stipulations both sides have already agreed to — no dispute needed, no argument required. The exercise bands used in the killings carry DNA from Lindsay Clancy, Patrick Clancy, and the children on their ends. And blood found in the basement of the Summer Street home has been confirmed to belong to Cora. Those are facts now, not allegations.

From there, former Massachusetts State Police criminalist Katarina Stashyn walked the jury through how DNA testing actually works and what the results from the case’s physical evidence showed — the kind of testimony that turns a crime scene into a data set.

Then came the human piece. Elaine Rossi, the family’s nanny, testified about her time working for the Clancys, including conversations in which Lindsay confided she was struggling with postpartum depression. It’s the connective tissue between the forensic timeline and the defense’s psychiatric argument — and it’s not going away.

Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.
