Lindsay Clancy Trial: Hospital Chaplain Reveals What Clancy Said About Her Kids

Lindsay Clancy, the 34-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family’s Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, is now facing testimony from the person who sat with her in the days after. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She’s pleaded not guilty, and her attorney, Kevin Reddington, is building an insanity defense around severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Today it was Shelia Cavanaugh, a chaplain at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, on the stand. Cavanaugh testified she first met with Clancy the morning after the killings, January 25, while Clancy was still intubated and surrounded by police and security. A week later, holding Clancy’s hands, she heard her say, “I’m so glad my children are safe” — then, later in that same conversation, describe a male voice that had allegedly told her the children would never be safe unless she killed them and herself. Cavanaugh kept visiting weekly after Clancy’s transfer to Tewksbury State Hospital, and says the grief hasn’t faded. On cross, prosecutors got her to admit she never wrote a word about “hearing voices” in her Brigham notes — even though she documented plenty else, including Clancy’s hopes for physical recovery.

Clancy allegedly attempted suicide after the killings by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.
