Alex Murdaugh’s Defense Wants Records About WHAT?!

Alex Murdaugh’s defense is asking a South Carolina judge for records tied to an explosive but disputed question: did local police ever handle the missing weapons used to kill Maggie and Paul Murdaugh? The September 30 motion seeks investigative files, witness interviews and grand-jury material concerning alleged handling, concealment or disposal of the firearms and clothing connected to the 2021 crime scene.
The filing cites reports that Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander was connected by witnesses to the missing weapons. Alexander was at Moselle the night of the killings, but he has not been charged and his attorney denies the allegations. The defense also highlights Alex Murdaugh’s $5,000 check to Alexander after the murders as part of the relationship it wants examined.
That is only one front in the discovery war. Murdaugh’s lawyers have also demanded full cellphone extraction files so their own experts can rebuild the digital timeline. Prosecutors responded in an October 6 filing that the cellphone evidence in the State’s possession had already been produced before the first trial and asked the court to deny the latest request.
The argument matters because the first investigation already produced real, documented forensic disputes. Defense filings say Maggie’s phone was not protected in a Faraday bag before location data was overwritten. Trial testimony established that confirmatory testing on Alex’s white T-shirt found no human blood on the tested stains. Low-level DNA from an unrelated male was also found beneath Maggie’s fingernails, and a judge approved additional private testing in 2026.
Murdaugh’s original convictions were reversed in May 2026. A new jury is scheduled to hear the murder case beginning April 5, 2027, in Sumter County. Before that happens, the judge has to separate newly reported allegations from evidence that can actually be tested in court.
