What Lindsay Clancy’s Jury Decision Means Now

A Massachusetts jury spent five weeks, heard from more than eighty witnesses, and still couldn’t agree on what to do with Lindsay Clancy. Now her attorney’s own attempt to fix that has become its own story.  Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, stood trial for the January 24, 2023 killings of her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — inside the family’s Summer Street home, where prosecutors say she strangled them with exercise resistance bands. She’s charged with three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation and has pleaded not guilty. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, argued an insanity defense centered on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication — the idea that the medical system meant to help her instead helped set the tragedy in motion. Reportedly, Clancy tried to take her own life afterward by jumping from a second-story window and has been paralyzed from the waist down ever since. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan.  Nine women and three men deliberated across thirty-nine-plus hours and told Judge William Sullivan three separate times they were deadlocked. With no verdict in sight, Reddington tried to have a holdout juror removed, then took an emergency appeal straight to the state’s highest court. It didn’t work. Sullivan declared a mistrial.  Plymouth County’s district attorney now has to decide whether to put this case in front of a jury again, with a status hearing already scheduled. We’re also getting into the phrase that follows Clancy everywhere she goes online — “another Lindsay Clancy” — and why the shorthand might be erasing the exact warning signs that actually matter.
