Murdaugh’s Investigator Problem Started With One 2015 Interview
Who searches SLED’s files besides SLED? That question sits under the Brady motion Alex Murdaugh’s defense filed on August 5, 2026 — a demand that prosecutors reopen their entire discovery file and prove the retrial jury gets everything the law requires.
Tony Brueski takes apart the demand piece by piece. The defense wants every witness deal made or modified since 2023, every new statement, every disciplinary record and internal affairs file attached to the investigators and analysts who built the case against Murdaugh — plus warrants, DNA developments, and anything from the appeal that touches the verdict’s integrity. Then it asks for the piece with teeth: written certification that a diligent, current search happened and came up empty.
The history driving it is specific. A judge quashed the Michael Colucci murder indictment in June 2025 after ruling the state withheld favorable evidence for nearly a decade — evidence a witness testified she handed to lead investigator David Owen back in 2015, and that Owen denied receiving. Owen ran the Murdaugh investigation too. A second former SLED agent from the case, Ryan Kelly, was fired from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office in June 2026, for allegations records don’t detail and with no known connection to his SLED work or to Murdaugh.
The state’s answer is predictable and not unreasonable to raise: the motion points to no specific hidden document and no specific compromised witness. Attorney General Alan Wilson’s office gets its say before Judge Debra McCaslin rules, with a hearing set for August 14 in Lexington County. Murdaugh is presumed innocent and faces retrial in April 2027. This episode is about the file that trial gets built on — and who vouches for it.
