Lori Vallow’s Appeal Claims THIS About Her Own Lawyer
Lori Vallow Daybell is serving seven life sentences for murdering her two children and conspiring to kill three other people. She believed her children were zombies whose souls had been taken over by dark spirits. She told an Arizona judge Jesus would free her from prison. Her appellate attorney Craig Durham has filed five constitutional claims with the Idaho Supreme Court, and the centerpiece is what happened to her defense attorney Mark Means.
The state has documented evidence that Chad Daybell arranged and paid for Means to represent Lori. In a recorded jail call, Chad called Means “my attorney.” Co-conspirators in a capital case cannot share a lawyer. The judge removed Means for the conflict, and Durham argues that removal violated Lori’s constitutional right to the attorney of her choice — an error that could erase the conviction without any proof of harm.
The state used Lori’s incompetency to explain the trial delays, to justify holding hearings without her, and to block her from choosing her own lawyer. Durham says you can’t use someone’s illness against them in three different directions. Oral arguments are November 2 in Boise. Even a complete reversal leaves two Arizona life sentences untouched. She’s not walking out of prison.
