He Faced 78 Years for Strangling Two Girls — A Judge Gave Him Community Service Instead-WEEK IN REVIEW

Jesse Butler was eighteen years old when he pleaded no contest to eleven felony charges in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The charges included attempted rape, rape by instrumentation, and domestic assault by strangulation against two teenage girls. One victim was choked until she lost consciousness and required emergency surgery on her neck. Her doctor told her she came within thirty seconds of dying. Police recovered video from Butler’s phone showing him strangling the other victim. Prosecutors could have pursued a sentence of up to seventy-eight years in prison.

Instead, a judge granted Butler youthful offender status. His punishment? Community service, counseling sessions, and supervision until his nineteenth birthday. No prison time. No sex offender registration. If he complies with the terms, his record gets erased completely.

The victims’ families say they were never consulted about the plea deal. Both girls were prepared to testify. That opportunity was taken from them without explanation. Butler’s father previously served as Director of Football Operations at Oklahoma State University. The judge who approved the youthful offender designation holds two degrees from OSU. No direct impropriety has been established, but protesters and families are demanding accountability and transparency.
