Alex Murdaugh’s Trial Has A NEW Home
Fewer than one in seven. That’s how many prospective jurors qualified to serve during Alex Murdaugh’s first murder trial. Judge Debra McCaslin called that number a floor, not a ceiling — and then moved the retrial eighty-six miles away to Sumter County. The defense fought for Charleston and offered McCaslin something extraordinary: a permanent waiver of all venue appeals in exchange for their preferred courtroom. McCaslin rejected the deal. The prosecution didn’t push for any specific alternative. McCaslin selected Sumter on her own. Three generations of the Murdaugh family ran the 14th Circuit prosecutor’s office for eighty-six consecutive years. That kind of influence doesn’t wash out with time. McCaslin found that some residents still revere the family name while others resent it, and either reaction disqualifies a juror. Becky Hill’s conviction for obstruction, perjury, and misconduct contaminated the courthouse itself. McCaslin’s order describes a building now inseparably linked to the original conviction and the Supreme Court’s decision to throw it out. Sumter County sits in a different judicial circuit with a population three times Colleton’s size. The retrial is set for April 5, 2027. McCaslin will personally oversee every step of jury selection. The defense didn’t get what they wanted, which means venue stays a live appellate issue if there’s a second conviction.
